Why Dermaplaning?

By: Nargiza Smith, Medical Aesthetician

For patients that are looking to exfoliate the skin without the use of chemicals or peeling agents, I typically recommend dermaplaning. This procedure, which involves gently guiding a scalpel along the top layer of skin, helps to remove dead cells, eliminates fine hair, and leaves the complexion looking brighter than before. While dermaplaning is one of the most popular facial treatments we offer at Deep Blue, it is still one I regularly receive questions about.  To help, I’ve compiled a short list of some of the most commonly asked questions regarding dermaplaning, as well as my answers below!

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an incredible treatment option in that it refines both the look and feel of the skin. By removing the top layer of the epidermis, products can more effectively penetrate and benefit the complexion. In addition, dermaplaning utilizes a physical mechanism to exfoliate, and is therefore safe for those who are pregnant, nursing, or have chemical sensitivities. Perfect for big events, dermaplaning will help to ensure your skin looks glowy and radiant in photos and on video.

Will dermaplaning make the hair of my face grow back thicker?

This is by far my most received question, and the answer is “no.” When performing this treatment, the vellus, (fine, light hair on the skin often referred to as “peach fuzz”) is removed along with dead skin cells on the top layer of the face and neck. While the vellus will grow back, it will do so as it originally was. So, you do not need to worry about your hair coming back thicker or darker than before.

How long does it take for the vellus to grow back?

While everyone’s complexion is different, the vellus typically returns to how it was prior to your treatment within 3-4 weeks.

As far as upkeep is concerned, taking time between sessions will not affect how your vellus grows back. However, I highly recommend trying the treatment out and seeing for yourself how great the results are, because you will likely want to continue including sessions to your regular skincare regimen.

Is there downtime associated with this treatment?

There is no downtime associated with a dermaplaning treatment.  Some patients may experience temporary pinkness or redness. However, this is very rare and typically subsides within an hour.

What does post-care look like?

There is no downtime required for this treatment. Though we do recommend patients remember to utilize SPF to prevent risk of hyperpigmentation. If you are interested in learning more about dermaplaning, or ready to book your appointment, give us a call today!
