Don’t Make These Common Mistakes After Botox, Fillers & Injectable Treatments

Posted On: 3-26-26 |Cosmetic Procedures

Injectable treatments like Botox®, dermal fillers, and biostimulators can deliver beautiful, natural-looking results – but what you do after your appointment is just as important as what happens in the treatment room.

To help protect your results (and avoid unnecessary side effects), here are a few things to avoid doing immediately after your appointment.

1. Don’t Hit the Gym

Exercise increases your heart rate and blood flow, which can cause swelling or even push your product into areas where it wasn’t intended. It’s best to skip the gym, hot yoga, anything high‑intensity for at least 24 hours after your injectable treatment.

2. Avoid Touching, Rubbing, or Massaging the Area

It can be tempting to “check” the treated area—but resist the urge. Pressure can shift the product, especially in the first few hours after treatment. Keep your hands off and let everything settle naturally.

3. Skip Alcohol for the Rest of the Day

Alcohol acts as a blood thinner and can increase bruising and swelling. If you want your results to heal cleanly, wait until the next day before grabbing that glass of wine.

4. Stay Out of Saunas, Steam Rooms, and Hot Showers

Heat causes vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels), which can worsen swelling or bruising. Stick to cool or lukewarm environments for the first 24 hours after Botox or filler treatments.

5. Don’t Lie Down Right After Botox

For neurotoxin treatments like Botox, Dysport®, or Daxxify®, avoid lying flat for 4 hours post‑treatment. This helps keep the product exactly where your injector placed it.

6. Stay Away From Makeup

Applying makeup too soon can introduce bacteria into injection sites. Give your skin at least 4-6 hours to recover before using brushes or sponges.

7. Don’t Schedule a Facial or Skin Treatment

We all love an appointment with a DBMS aesthetician. However, facials, chemical peels, microneedling, and laser treatments can have a negative effect on your results. Your skin needs time to heal, we recommend doing your facial before your injectable appointment or waiting 2 weeks before your next skin service.

8. Don’t Panic if You See Swelling or Bruising

Mild swelling and/or bruising are completely normal after injectable treatments. Give your body time to settle, and use cold compresses if recommended by your provider. Only worry if something seems severe or unusual – otherwise, patience is key.

What You Should Do After Injectables

Stay upright for several hours after treatment, follow your provider’s aftercare instructions carefully, and use cold compresses if recommended to help minimize swelling and bruising.

Final Thoughts

With just a little aftercare awareness, you are sure to get the most out of your injectable treatment. Always follow your provider’s specific aftercare instructions, as recommendations vary based on your treatment.

If you have questions, be sure to reach out to your provider for guidance and support!
